British School at Rome

Historic site · Pinciano, Italy

A residential research institute in Valle Giulia, at Via Antonio Gramsci 61, 00197 Roma, in a building by Edwin Lutyens. It publishes events, exhibitions and a library rather than general opening hours, so none are given here. Its director is Abigail Brundin. Piazzale Simon Bolivar, with the monument to Bolivar, is in front of it.

History

It was founded in 1901 and recognised by Royal Charter in 1912. Lutyens designed the building as the British pavilion of the 1911 international exposition in Rome, taking the upper storey of St Paul's Cathedral in London as his model; the Italian state then gave the land, and the permanent building was completed in 1916.
