Bush Street–Cottage Row Historic District

A district of Victorian houses covering 2101–2125 Bush Street, 1–6 Cottage Row and 1940–1948 Sutter Street. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 27 December 1982, reference number 82000983. The houses are two-storey frame structures of Italianate or early Stick style, with channel rustic siding, double-hung windows and panelled entry recesses. An original small corner grocery store occupies the ground floor of a residence at 2101–2101A Bush Street.
History
The nomination gives construction dates of 1874 to 1882 and names The Real Estate Associates and C. L. Taylor as the builders, with William Hollis (1839–1895) as the company's president. In September 1874 the company bought the whole block west of what is now Cottage Row for $25,250 and subdivided the land into 23 lots, three facing Fillmore and ten each facing Bush and Sutter, which it sold for $4,200 to $6,623 between 16 January and 28 August 1875. It grouped the more expensive houses on Bush and Sutter and the more economical on Fillmore, and sited the whole beside the horse-car line then running along Bush Street. Architectural services in 1875 came from Silas P. Ford, Superintendent of the company's Building Department.
