Cable Car Museum

The Cable Car Museum is at 1201 Mason Street, inside what its own site calls the Washington-Mason powerhouse and carbarn on Nob Hill, so the winding machinery a visitor looks at is the machinery still hauling the cars up the street outside. It is run by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of cable car history. Admission is free. The museum's own site gives its opening days in two ways that do not agree, so no days are given here.

History

The building is San Francisco Landmark No. 43, designated in 1971 under the name Cable Car Barn And Power House, and SF Planning records the parcel as built in 1900. The cable cars were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 15 October 1966 as San Francisco Cable Cars, reference number 66000233, and are a National Historic Landmark; the National Park Service addresses that record to 1390 Washington Street, which is the same building off its other frontage.
