Camden Snow Bowl

Per Camden Snow Bowl's own "About" page, "In the middle of the Great Depression, volunteers begin work to build a lodge, skate house, and toboggan chute. All material was donated and lumber had to be floated across Hosmer Pond," describing the fall 1936 start of construction. The area's own website states, "Owned by the town of Camden, the Snow Bowl is managed and operated by full-time town staff," elsewhere describing it as "Managed by the Camden Parks and Rec Dept." The original, volunteer-built lodge burned down in 1967; the current A-frame lodge was built in 1968. In 2014 a triple chair lift was installed, and new LED lighting enabled night skiing. Citing the Lewiston Daily Sun, the operator's history page states "one January 1947 weekend saw over 10,000 visitors, with car license plates observed from as far away as Florida, Texas, and Washington." Per Wikipedia's "Camden Snow Bowl" article, it is "Located on Ragged Mountain in Camden, Maine," with a "clear view of the ocean, which can be seen from the summit of the triple chairlift." The operator's own homepage describes it as "the only ski area on the East Coast with ocean views," adding that "The Snow Bowl is also home to the country's only remaining original, gravity-operated 400-foot-long wooden toboggan chute." The Jack Williams Toboggan Chute, per the operator's own toboggan chute page, is "a handmade wooden trough, flooded with ice, with an outrun at the end onto Hosmer Pond," closed to the public during the annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships, which per Wikipedia have been held at the Snow Bowl since 1991 and are described as "the only organized wood toboggan event in the country."
