History

Per Wikipedia's "Camden, Maine" article, "The Whitehall Inn opened in 1901 in a converted sea captain's mansion on High Street, catering to affluent visitors." In 1912, Edna St. Vincent Millay first recited her poem "Renascence," written from atop Mount Battie, to guests at the Whitehall Inn, and a patron's resulting offer to fund her Vassar College education "launched her career as a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet." The inn's own website describes itself as "the place where Edna St. Vincent Millay was discovered and Peyton Place was filmed."
