History
Per Wikipedia's "Curtis Island (Maine)" article, Curtis Island was known as "Negro Island" from around 1768, named after a Black sailor who later lived there, before being renamed in 1934 after Cyrus H. K. Curtis, publisher of the Saturday Evening Post and a longtime resident and benefactor of Camden. The lighthouse on Curtis Island appears in a painting by Fitz Henry Lane titled "Lighthouse at Camden, Maine."
