Chiesa di San Gregorio al Celio

Roma Capitale records that Gregory, who came from the Anicii and had been Praefectus Urbis, founded the monastery in 575 by turning his family house over to it, and that of the medieval building only the thirteenth-century Cosmatesque pavement survives. The complex was granted in 1573 to the Camaldolese, who still serve it. The staircase and the square in front were rebuilt for the Jubilee of 1600, and in 1633 Cardinal Scipione Borghese gave Giovanni Battista Soria the atrium and the façade, which carry the Borghese eagle and dragons. Roma Capitale records that the portico holds the tomb of Sir Edward Carne, sent to Rome by Henry VIII in 1561 over the divorce from Catherine of Aragon. The interior has three naves on sixteen antique columns and is baroque after Francesco Ferrari's work of 1725; a small chapel off the right aisle holds Gregory's marble episcopal seat, of the first century BC; and the Cappella Salviati, by Francesco da Volterra and completed by Carlo Maderno in 1600, holds the fresco of the Madonna con Bambino.
