Parco Egerio

Park · Celio, Italy

A public garden of lawns, tall trees and shrubs on the Caelian slopes, whose planting keeps the green backdrop of the hill as it is seen from the Appia Antica. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

History

Roma Capitale records that the park is named because the legendary lucus camenarum, the Grove of the Camenae, stood on the Caelian slopes outside the walls, with a spring in a grotto where by legend the nymph Egeria met Numa Pompilius, and that classical sources say the grotto was given a monumental marble facing in the imperial period, to the scandal of contemporaries who missed the old grass and tufa.
