Chiesa del Sacro Cuore del Suffragio

A neo-Gothic parish church on the embankment, by the engineer Giuseppe Gualandi, who took northern Gothic as his model. Italian Wikipedia reports the nickname the building attracted, the little Duomo of Milan. The Museo delle anime del Purgatorio occupies a room off its sacristy.

History

The foundation stone was blessed in 1894 by Joseph-Jean-Louis Robert, bishop of Marseille; construction proper began in 1908; the church was consecrated on 17 May 1921. The parish is entrusted to the Missionari del Sacro Cuore di Gesù. Its founder, Victor Jouët, had established the Associazione del Sacro Cuore del Suffragio delle anime del Purgatorio in Rome in 1893. Roma Capitale's toponymy register records lungotevere Prati under an attribution of 1 July 1887, by Prop. al CC n. 166, with the note R. PRATI.
