Chiesa di Santo Spirito in Sassia (Santuario della Divina Misericordia)

Historic site · Borgo, Italy

A rectory church beside the Santo Spirito hospital, also the Santuario della Divina Misericordia. Its own site gives the address as Via dei Penitenzieri 12 and the telephone as 06 6879310. No Mass times or opening hours are published here.

History

Italian Wikipedia, densely footnoted to Armellini, Hülsen, Krautheimer and Gigli, dates the present church's building to 1538–1590 and its consecration to 17 May 1571, and gives Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane for the church, Baccio Pontelli for the bell tower of about 1471–1475 and Guidetto Guidetti for the façade. It is a rectory rather than a parish and carries a cardinal-deacon's title. The predecessor church of S. Maria in Saxia was founded under Ine with the assent of Gregory II and rebuilt by Leo IV around 850, after the Saracen raid of 846. In 1369 the Byzantine emperor John V Palaiologos abjured the schism here before Urban V.
