Chiesa di Santa Maria ai Monti

Historic site · Monti, Italy

A church built from 1580 by Giacomo Della Porta for Gregory XIII, on the site of a thirteenth-century Clarissan monastery.

History

Roma Capitale says the church was raised after a blind woman's cure was attributed to an icon found on the site. Della Porta modelled the facade on that of the Gesù, which he also built. Inside, on a single nave, the vault Ascensione is by Cristoforo Casolani, of the early seventeenth century; the stucco angels of 1588 are by Ambrogio Buonvicino; and the high altar carries a Virgin and Child with SS Stephen and Lawrence of the early fifteenth century.
