Colonna Traiana

Historic site · Monti, Italy

The column erected in 113 AD, about forty metres tall with its base, devised by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus.

History

Roma Capitale records seventeen monolithic drums and an internal spiral stair of 185 steps. Trajan's ashes were placed in the base; he died on 8 August 117. In 1587 Sixtus V replaced the lost bronze statue at the top with a figure of St Peter.
