Ping Yuen, 平園, is a public housing complex of four buildings along Pacific Avenue with 434 apartments in all: West, Central and East Ping Yuen on the south side of the street, and North Ping Yuen. It is occupied housing and there is no visitor access.
History
Wikipedia records that the formal effort to build it began in 1939, that West, Central and East Ping Yuen were dedicated in 1951, and that North Ping Yuen followed in 1961. Each apartment had its own bathroom and kitchen from 1951, unlike the single-room-occupancy housing typical of the quarter. The murder of Julia Wong in 1978 prompted a residents' rent strike over maintenance and security, led by the future mayor Ed Lee. Ownership passed from the city to the Chinatown Community Development Center in 2016.
