Chinatown-Rose Pak station

An underground Muni Metro station beneath Stockton Street at Washington Street, opened on 19 November 2022 as part of the Central Subway and named for Rose Pak, the Chinatown political activist who helped secure support and funding for the station and for the T Third Street extension. It was designed by Kwan Henmi, now DLR Group. The structure extends 100 feet below ground and carries a 5,400-square-foot public plaza on its roof. Muni routes 1, 8, 30 and 45, the 8AX and 8BX peak expresses, the T Bus and the 91 Owl also serve it.

History

The building at 933-949 Stockton Street, which housed 56 low-income residents, was acquired by eminent domain and demolished for the station; the residents were relocated to a new building at Broadway and Sansome Street, with $8 million from the SFMTA among other grants. Stockton Street stayed open throughout construction from 2013, while a half-block of Washington Street was closed. A couplet by Carin Mui, 黃立慈, winner of a 2016 Chinatown Community Development Center contest, is printed in calligraphy on red opaque glass at the station plaza: 昔日漂洋採金礦，今朝劈地鋳銀龍 — "In the past we traveled across the Pacific to mine for gold; Now, we break through earth to form a silver dragon."
