Chiostro del Bramante
Museum · Ponte, Italy
Bramante's cloister for Santa Maria della Pace, now an exhibition venue. Roma Capitale states that the exhibition ticket office is open every day and closes one hour before the venue, and directs readers to the official site, chiostrodelbramante.it, for current times; the telephone number is 06 68809035. The cloister and the church physically adjoin, and from the first floor there is a view of Raphael's Sibyls in the church.
History
it.wikipedia records that Cardinal Oliviero Carafa commissioned the cloister around 1500 and that Donato Bramante designed it, and that it was built between 1500 and 1504. The square plan is generated by repeating a module equal to the width of the portico, giving a central void four modules by four and a refectory two by four; sixteen piers carry a continuous cross-vaulted portico, and the elevation has two orders proportioned to the Vitruvian rule. The lunettes on the back wall are frescoed with Stories of the Life of the Virgin. It became an exhibition space and cultural centre in 1996, run by DART - Chiostro del Bramante.
