Claybury Woods and Park

The ancient woodland carries Forest Stewardship Council certification. Claybury Hospital, on the ridge above the park, opened in 1893 as the fifth Middlesex County Asylum to designs by George Thomas Hine; its main block, tower and chapel were listed Grade II on 13 June 1990 as NHLE 1080979. Claybury Hall was listed Grade II earlier, on 22 February 1979, as NHLE 1081005, and the former stable block at the hall is Grade II, NHLE 1300546. The hospital site has been redeveloped as housing and a gymnasium under the name Repton Park, with the former chapel now a swimming complex. The Claybury conservation area was designated in 2005, one of sixteen in the borough. Chigwell station on the Central line, 1,987 m from Claybury Hall, is the nearest station and stands outside the borough in Epping Forest District, Essex; the 169, the 275 and the W12 stop within 600 m of the park.
