St Mary's Church, Woodford

The Grade II listing is list entry 1081032. The church was in existence by the twelfth century and its rector in the 1520s was John Larke. The medieval west tower and spire were dangerously decayed by 1705 and were replaced with a brick tower in 1708; the medieval church was substantially rebuilt in brick in Gothic style in 1816, and the church was rebuilt again in 1971-72 after an arson attack in 1969. It has a ring of eight bells cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and a three-manual Grant, Degens and Bradbeer organ, and one of the Great Trees of London, a copper beech, stands in the churchyard. Four churchyard monuments carry their own entries, two of them at a higher grade than the church itself: the Godfrey Monument, Grade II, NHLE 1357983, and the Raikes Mausoleum, Grade II, NHLE 1183475, with the Keepe Monument, Grade II, NHLE 1081033, and the North Monument, Grade II, NHLE 1081034. South Woodford station is the nearest station.
