Around 8,000 works, of which the displayed selection runs from the Borgia Apartment to the Sistine Chapel, on the Vatican Museums itinerary and covered by the Museums ticket. The artists the Museums name include Van Gogh, Bacon, Chagall, Carra, de Chirico, Manzu, Capogrossi, Fontana, Burri and Matisse.
History
Paul VI inaugurated the collection on 23 June 1973, following his address to artists in the Sistine Chapel on 7 May 1964. It was assembled over about ten years by his secretary Msgr Pasquale Macchi, on a nucleus of nineteenth-century works that had entered the Pinacoteca in the late 1950s under Pius XII. A Matisse room opened in 2011, holding works relating to the Vence Chapel that came into the collections in 1980 by gift of Pierre Matisse.
