On the Vatican Museums itinerary and covered by the Museums ticket. It covers the Iron Age of the ninth century BC to the convergence with Rome in the first century BC, and its Antiquarium Romanum section runs to the fifth century AD. Bramante's double-helix staircase, begun in 1512, is visible from inside the museum.
History
Gregory XVI founded the museum and it was inaugurated on 2 February 1837. Later acquisitions came from Falcioni in 1898, Benedetto Guglielmi in 1935, Mario Astarita in 1967 and Giacinto Guglielmi in 1987. It occupies the Palazzetto del Belvedere of Innocent VIII Cibo, 1484 to 1492, designed by Pollaiolo, and the apartment of the Tor dei Venti of Pius IV Medici, 1559 to 1565, begun by Michelangelo and Girolamo da Carpi and finished by Pirro Ligorio. The sixteenth-century fresco cycles are by Federico Barocci and Federico Zuccari, 1563, and Santi di Tito and Niccolo Circignani delle Pomarance, 1564.
