Croton Water Filtration Plant

A filtration plant built 160 feet underground beneath the Mosholu Golf Course driving range in Van Cortlandt Park. It measures 830 by 550 feet — larger than Yankee Stadium — processes up to 320 million gallons per day, is designed to remove 99.9% of Giardia cysts, Cryptosporidium and viruses, and supplies roughly 10% of New York City's water.
History
Construction ran from 2007 to 2015 and the plant was activated in May 2015. It was projected at $800 million and its final cost reached $3.2 billion, due to delays and community opposition; a contemporary headline ran "Plan to Put Filtration Plant Under Park Angers the Bronx". Mitigation funds from the project restored the park's Parade Ground and built the Sachkerah Woods Playground.
