Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi

Historic site · Parione, Italy

The fountain at the centre of Piazza Navona. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina gives its author as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and its date as 1648-1651, and its materials as travertine, marble, granite and bronze. It was originally fed by the acqua Vergine.

History

The Sovrintendenza's account: Innocent X commissioned the fountain, which replaced a trough installed with the square's two side fountains in the 1570s. In 1647 the pope gave Borromini the new conduit that brought 180 once of Acqua Vergine to the piazza, and had the obelisk moved in. Bernini won the commission having presented a silver model.
