Fontana del Nettuno in piazza del Popolo
Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy
The fountain set into the western hemicycle of piazza del Popolo: a semicircular travertine basin under a great travertine shell, with Neptune holding a trident and two tritons on dolphins at his feet.
History
The Sovrintendenza gives it as completed in 1823, by Valadier with Giovanni Ceccarini, about 1790 to 1861. Valadier's original scheme included two small ground-level lakes at the foot of the hemicycles, which were never built. Rome has a second and much older Fontana del Nettuno in piazza Navona, in rione Parione; this is the piazza del Popolo one.
