Fontana del Prigione

Roma Capitale records that Domenico Fontana made it in 1587-1590 for Sixtus V, as the perspective backdrop of an avenue in the garden of the Villa Montalto Peretti on the Esquiline. The villa was destroyed in the late nineteenth century; the Comune bought parts of the fountain, which was dismantled in 1888 and recomposed in 1894-95 as the backdrop of via Genova, then dismantled again and recomposed in 1923 on via Goffredo Mameli to a design by the Genio Civile. The Prigione sculpture, the statues of Apollo and Venus and the head of the Aesculapius are lost or missing. It was restored in 2005-2006.
