Villa Borghese holds some fifty fountains, most of them a name, a century and an avenue. The Fontane Oscure, formerly the Fontana Rotonda and the Fontana Ovale, of 1620, face each other across viale del Museo Borghese. Two shell-basin fountainlets of 1618 to 1620 stand at Piazzale Scipione Borghese, with a nineteenth-century Seconda Fontana della Venere; two trilobed fountainlets with reliefs of about 1897 are at Piazzale Museo Borghese. The two Fontane delle Piramidi, of the late seventeenth century, are on viale delle Piramidi, and the Fontana di Diana and the Prima Fontana della Venere are in the Italian gardens at Piazzale Ferdowsi. The Fontana del Sarcofago delle Vittorie of 1917 is on viale Goethe. On viale Fiorello La Guardia are the Fontana dei Leoni, made before 1788, and the oval-basin fountain of the Preschiera of 1908, built when the bridge linking Villa Borghese to the Pincio was made. On viale Giorgio Washington are a sixteenth-century fountain-nymphaeum with a small lake and a headless river god, both of which came from the Villa Giustiniani.
