Irving Square Park
Park · Bushwick, New York
A 2.76-acre park filling a full city block, which NYC Parks calls Bushwick's town square. Two projects between 2006 and 2008 renovated the park and playground and added antique-style gates, a performance space and a garden plaza; the children's playground sits near the Knickerbocker Avenue entrance.
History
Kings County purchased the parcel from Henry Roth and his wife in 1895 for $70,000. Washington Irving is the likely honoree of the name. The surrounding area had earlier been owned by the Duryea family, descendants of French Huguenot immigrants who settled in Bushwick in the 1680s.
