John Brown's Birthplace Site

Historic site · Torrington, Connecticut

The 40-acre homestead where abolitionist John Brown was born in 1800, surrounded by roughly 100 acres of forest. The house burned in a 1918 chimney fire; a 1932 granite monument marks the spot. On the Connecticut Freedom Trail since 1997 and a Connecticut Archaeological Preserve since 2003, with a 2/3-mile nature trail and a newly opened wetland boardwalk at the trailhead.
