Marble Hill

The villa was built between 1724 and 1729 for Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, who lived there until her death, and its compact design became a standard model for the Georgian English villa and for plantation houses in the American colonies. The estate came into London County Council ownership and opened to the public in 1903. Restoration began under the Greater London Council in 1965, and after the GLC was dissolved the freehold passed to English Heritage. The stable block is separately Grade II listed, NHLE 1357725, the ice house Grade II, NHLE 1194472, and White Lodge to Marble Hill Park Grade II, NHLE 1250209 — a different building from the Grade I White Lodge in Richmond Park, NHLE 1250045.
