Orleans House Gallery, Orleans Road, TW1 3BL, publishes "Tuesday–Sunday: 10am–5pm Closed Mondays" and "Free admission". It occupies the baroque Octagon Room designed by James Gibbs, its service wing and a converted stable block, and shows art relating to the borough and neighbouring areas. NHLE 1250280 is Grade I and names "Orleans House the Octagon Room and service wing adjoining", which is what survives.
History
The architect John James built the Palladian villa in 1710 for the politician and diplomat James Johnston, with construction of the wider house running from 1702 to 1737. It takes its name from Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans and later the last King of France, who stayed there in the early nineteenth century. The house was derelict by the early twentieth century and mostly demolished in 1926, but the octagonal room was preserved. The gallery publishes its address as Orleans House Gallery, Orleans Road, Twickenham TW1 3BL, and routes 33, 490, R68, R70 and night routes N22 and N33 serve it.
