Mausoleo di Lucilio Peto

It was discovered in 1887, about six metres below the modern level, during work on the former Vigna Bertone, and belongs to the burial ground along the via Salaria. The marble inscription on the main front, in Luni marble, of which five courses survive within a Lesbian cyma, assigns it to Lucilius Paetus of the Scaptia tribe, military tribune, prefect of engineers and of cavalry, who built it in his lifetime for himself and his sister Lucilia Polla. A rear entrance and corridor lead to a cruciform burial chamber with three niches for funerary couches. It was abandoned and almost buried by the Trajanic period, and reused in the fourth century, when small masonry tombs were built against the drum, two tiers of loculi were cut into the corridor, and a small catacomb with a main gallery and unused branches was dug into the tufa and reached by a stair. It was robbed of its furnishings and marble in the fourth century and again in the sixteenth and seventeenth. It reopened to the public in August 2010 after a long restoration campaign, and was restored again in 2025 under the PNRR Caput Mundi programme.
