Monumento a Camillo Cavour
Historic site · Prati, Italy
A bronze, bardiglio marble and granite monument standing in the garden of piazza Cavour, with Cavour in contemporary dress facing the Palazzo di Giustizia. Four colossal bronze groups sit at the foot of the pedestal: Italia and Roma to the south, Pensiero to the west, Azione to the east, and to the north Forza, a lion guarding the urn of the plebiscite.
History
The Sovrintendenza Capitolina records the sculptor as Stefano Galletti (1833-1905), the execution as 1885 to 1895, and the unveiling as 24 September 1895, in the presence of King Umberto I, for the twenty-fifth anniversary of 20 September 1870. It gives the two inscriptions: on the south face, A / CAMILLO CAVOUR / ROMA; on the north, XX / SETTEMBRE / MDCCCXCV S.P.Q.R.
