Turismo Roma gives the museum's address as Largo di Villa Peretti 1. Italian Wikipedia dates the building 1883-1886; Turismo Roma dates it 1883-1887 and names Camillo Pistrucci as its architect, working in a neo-Cinquecento style on ground previously occupied by the Villa Peretti built by Sixtus V and later a Massimo family residence. The State acquired it in 1981 and converted it to exhibition space.

Turismo Roma names among the holdings the former Museo Kircheriano material, the Gnecchi and Savoia collections, the Vittorio Emanuele III collection of medieval and modern coins and a goldwork section; and, among the sculpture, the Augustus as Pontifex Maximus from Via Labicana, the Fanciulla di Anzio, the Discobolus Lancellotti, the Sleeping Hermaphroditus, the Doidalsas Venus about to bathe and the Apollo del Tevere. On the second floor are the frescoes from the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, and four rooms of the nine surviving from the Villa della Farnesina, dated to about 20 BC, are reconstructed there.

Turismo Roma republishes the opening hours as Tuesday to Sunday 9.30 to 19.00, with the ticket office closing at 18.00 and the museum closed on Monday. One note on the address: the published address is on a largo whose northern end lies in the neighbouring rione of Esquilino, while the museum building itself is in Castro Pretorio, which is where this guide carries it.
