New Wimbledon Theatre

The theatre opened on 26 December 1910 with a pantomime, to designs by Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy Young, possibly working from a 1908 design by Frank H. Jones. A gilded statue of Laetitia, Roman goddess of gaiety, holding a laurel crown, stands on the dome; it was taken down in the Second World War in case it guided bombers and replaced in 1991. The Ambassador Theatre Group took the building over in autumn 2003 and it reopened in February 2004. A bus stop called Wimbledon Theatre is 32 m from the door, on routes 57, 93, 131 and 219, and Wimbledon station is 470 m away, carrying the District line, South Western Railway, Thameslink and London Trams.
