Wimbledon Windmill Museum

Charles March, a Roehampton carpenter, built the mill in 1817 as a hollow post mill, and the millwrights Sanderson and Sons rebuilt it as a smock mill when it was preserved in 1893. It has an octagonal two-storey brick base, four patent sails and a cast-iron brake wheel six feet across. The museum opened in 1976 on the first floor only, the ground floor still being the Wimbledon Common Rangers' accommodation, and a Heritage Lottery grant extended it to both floors in 1999. Robert Baden-Powell stayed in the Mill House in 1902 and wrote parts of Scouting for Boys there; it was published in 1908. The Rangers release the brake and turn the sails at 2pm on set weekends roughly every five weeks, for 30 to 45 minutes depending on the wind. The National Heritage List for England records 11 Grade II* entries in the borough against 3 at Grade I and 228 at Grade II.
