The railway station on piazzale dei Partigiani, faced entirely in travertine, with a pillared portico, a 1940 relief of Bellerophon and Pegasus by Francesco Nagni on the right and a fountain with sea horses of 1957 on the left. Its floors carry black-and-white mosaics on Roman themes, from Aeneas leaving Carthage to St Peter's, designed by Giulio Rosso and Maria Immacolata Zaffuto.
History
A stop opened here on 1 May 1911 and was raised to a station on 21 October 1922. For Hitler's visit of 6 May 1938 a temporary monumental station was thrown up in 45 days, in Innocenti tubing faced with wood and stucco imitating travertine, to designs by Roberto Narducci; the permanent building, by the same designer, was built for the Exposition planned for 1942 and inaugurated on 28 October 1940. The avenue to Porta San Paolo and the forecourt were named via A. Hitler and piazzale A. Hitler for that visit, and are now viale delle Cave Ardeatine and piazzale dei Partigiani. Narducci's circular jet fountain on the forecourt was removed for the 1990 works and never restored; it appears at the end of Carlo Verdone's Un sacco bello.
