Palazzo Nainer

Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy

A long-fronted palace on via del Babuino adjoining Santa Maria in Montesanto, built between 1818 and 1821 as part of Valadier's new scheme for piazza del Popolo and the Tridente. Part of it is now the Hotel Palazzo Nainer and the rest private flats.

History

it.wikipedia records that it was built over a former Augustinian monastery; that the long façade is in three parts, the central one in three orders articulated by pilasters, with a rusticated cornice separating the upper order and a balustraded terrace along the whole central section; that the Marchese Giampietro Campana bought it in the mid-nineteenth century and kept and showed part of his collection here; and that it was raised by a storey in 1872 during the works that followed Rome becoming capital.
