Peter Luger Steak House

Restaurant · South Williamsburg, New York

A steakhouse at the Brooklyn foot of the Williamsburg Bridge, operating continuously under various ownership since 1887 and named to the James Beard Foundation's America's Classics list in 2002.

History

It opened in 1887 as Carl Luger's Cafe, Billiards and Bowling Alley in what was then a German neighborhood. After founder Peter Luger's death in 1941 the business declined under his son, until Sol Forman and Seymour Sloyer bought it at auction for $35,000 in 1950 and revived it. Descendants of the Forman and Sloyer families run it today.
