Piazza Albania and the Monumento a Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg

A square on the western side of the rione, with an equestrian bronze of Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg (1403 to 1468) on a semi-oval pedestal above a rectangular travertine base. He rides at a walk in traditional Albanian dress, wearing the two-horned helmet whose goat protome carries long horns, a drawn sword raised in his right hand. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina states that the monument was unveiled in Piazza Albania by Benito Mussolini on 27 October 1940. it.wikipedia gives the sculptor as Romano Romanelli.

History

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina states that the square was formerly known as Piazza Raudusculana, after the gate that opened here in the stretch of the Servian Walls, and had recently been renamed Piazza Albania in connection with the annexation of Albania to the Kingdom of Italy in 1939. A commemorative epigraph was placed on the main face of the base in 1968 by the Amministrazione capitolina, for the fifth centenary of the condottiero's death.
