Piazza del Campidoglio

Historic site · Campitelli, Italy

The square on top of the Capitoline, with the Palazzo Senatorio at its head and a museum palace on either side. The Musei Capitolini's own site says the piazza in its present form was designed around the middle of the sixteenth century by Michelangelo Buonarroti, and that the palaces, the sculpture and the paving were carried out over the following centuries with additions and changes.

History

The same site's account of the ancient hill describes two summits, the Capitolium and the Arx, separated by a valley corresponding to today's square, whose level was about eight metres below the present one. Besides the square itself, OpenStreetMap maps four named ways and stairs on the hill: the Rampa Caffarelli, the Scala dell'Arce Capitolina, the Scalinata dell'Ara Coeli and the Clivus Capitolinus.
