Piazza Mattei

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy

The square the Fontana delle Tartarughe stands in, at the edge of the Isola Mattei, with Palazzo Costaguti on one corner and two earlier Mattei palaces facing it.

History

Roma Capitale's page for the square describes the low unadorned facades of the two older Mattei palaces on it, one built at the end of the fifteenth century and the other in the first half of the sixteenth, probably by Nanni di Baccio Bigio for the sons of Mattei. The fountain came to the square in the 1580s after Muzio Mattei persuaded the administration to move it from piazza Giudea.
