Sala Santa Rita

Attraction · Sant'Angelo, Italy

An exhibition space in a deconsecrated church, run by the Dipartimento Attività Culturali of Roma Capitale, which gives it as open when an exhibition is running.

History

Carlo Fontana built the church of Santa Rita da Cascia in Campitelli about 1650 to 1665 over the 11th-century San Biagio de Mercato, at the foot of the Aracoeli steps, designing the facade for a diagonal rather than a frontal view because of the narrow street it faced. The interior is octagonal with a small atrium. The church was dismantled stone by stone in 1928 and re-erected on the present site in 1937 to 1940, during the works that opened the via del Mare. The building returned to the Comune in 1990, was comprehensively restored around 2000 and reopened to the public with a new programme from April 2024.
