Piazza Navona

Historic site · Parione, Italy

Piazza Navona takes the shape of the ancient stadium beneath it, and was given its monumental form for Innocent X (Giovanni Battista Pamphilj). UNESCO names Piazza Navona among the Renaissance and Baroque urban developments of the Historic Centre of Rome (World Heritage site 91).

History

Three fountains stand along the length of the square — the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi at the centre, the Fontana del Moro, and the basin at the north end — together with the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone and the Palazzo Pamphilj. The square is wholly inside rione Parione, which is not true of most of Parione's edges.
