Preston High School entrance

A private, all-female high school at 2780 Schurz Avenue, occupying the Havemeyer-Huntington mansion. It was founded in 1947 by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion and named for Monsignor Thomas Scott Preston, who with Mother Mary Veronica founded the order. Its motto is Virtus Mille Scuta.

History

Havemeyer purchased the property in 1863 from the heirs of Dominick Lynch Lawrence, and Huntington acquired it in 1884. The Sisters of the Divine Compassion bought the estate in 1927 and ran it as the House of the Holy Family before converting it to a high school in 1947. The campus was expanded in 1960 and again in 1965. The school's logo was modified in 1997 to incorporate the Throgs Neck Bridge, representing a bridge to opportunity. In 2025 the school reached a 25-year, $8.5 million deal with the Ballys Foundation.
