Palazzo Barberini ai Giubbonari (Casa Grande Barberini)

Historic site · Regola, Italy

The Barberini family's first Roman house, with frontage on via dei Giubbonari and piazza del Monte di Pietà. It is owned today by the Comune di Roma and houses schools, among them the Liceo Vittoria Colonna.

History

The house was assembled between 1581 and 1658 over four generations by buying up neighbouring properties, beginning with a house with four ground-floor shops bought from the Scapucci family on 15 June 1581 by Monsignor Francesco Barberini (1528–1600). It remained the residence of Taddeo Barberini, Prince of Palestrina, until his flight to France, and Barberini property until the 1730s, when the family sold it to the Discalced Carmelites for their curia; it passed later to the Monte di Pietà.
