The Rose Theatre is at 24-26 High Street, KT1 1HL, on the stretch of the High Street between the Guildhall and Clattern Bridge. It opened on 16 January 2008 with an 822-seat auditorium and works as a producing house rather than a receiving house, staging its own drama alongside comedy and an education programme.
History
The auditorium plan is modelled on the Elizabethan Rose Theatre on Bankside in Southwark, with the seating wrapped around a shallow thrust stage and stalls seating in the pit. The Kingston building opened on 16 January 2008 and stands inside the historic core of the town, between the Guildhall, where the Coronation Stone stands, and the Hogsmill crossing at Clattern Bridge.
