Broadway Tunnel (Robert C. Levy Tunnel)

In 1863 the California State Assembly granted Abner Doble, I. T. Pennel, Joseph M. Wood and I. W. Cudworth the right to tunnel through Russian Hill, on the line of Broadway street, from Mason street to Hyde or Larkin street. Nothing came of it. Bion J. Arnold revived the idea in a report to the city in March 1913. City voters approved a 5 million dollar bond for the work in 1948, and the tunnel opened on 21 December 1952.
