Macondray Lane
Attraction · Russian Hill, California
A pedestrian lane running two blocks east and west between Leavenworth and Taylor Streets, parallel to Union and Green. A set of wooden steps descends from the lane to Taylor Street, and the view north takes in Alcatraz Island and San Francisco Bay.
History
The lane is a contributing site of the Russian Hill-Macondray Lane District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 7 January 1988, reference number 87002286, and carried by the California Office of Historic Preservation as N1542. The district covers roughly 900-982 Green Street, 1918-1960 Jones Street, 15-84 Macondray Lane and 1801-1809 Taylor Street: 1.6 acres, with twelve contributing buildings and one contributing site. Four houses in the district survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, and 982 Green Street was built in 1878. In the 2017 documentary The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin, Maupin confirmed the lane as the model for Barbary Lane in Tales of the City.
