The residential crest of the hill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 22 January 1988, reference number 87002289, and carried by the California Office of Historic Preservation as N1549. It covers roughly 1020-1032 Broadway, 1-49 Florence Street, 1728-1742 Jones Street, 1-7 Russian Hill Place, 1629-1715 Taylor Street and 1000-1085 Vallejo Street. The listing included two contributing sites and five contributing structures. The streets are open to walk; the houses are private.

History

The enclave escaped the 1906 fire. Its street treatment is Beaux-Arts, with retaining walls, ramps and walkways engineered against grades of 16 percent, 23 percent and 40 percent. Work by Willis Polk, Charles F. Whittlesey, Julia Morgan, Albert Farr and Charles W. McCall stands inside the boundary, together with buildings by the amateur architect Joseph Worcester. Residents named in the nomination include Katherine Atkinson, Maynard Dixon, Sara Bard Field, Dorothea Lange, Rose Wilder Lane, Horatio P. Livermore, Willis Polk, Mary Curtis Richardson and Dora Norton Williams.
