Church of St Mary the Virgin, Wanstead

The Grade I listing was made on 20 December 1954 as list entry 1081008. The parish is first recorded in 1208, and the medieval church was replaced 70 feet to the north by the present building between 1787 and 1790, on a plot given by James Tylney-Long. Thomas Hardwick designed it; the foundation stone was laid on 13 July 1787 and the church was completed on 24 June 1790, consecrated by Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London. The monument to Josiah Child was moved in when its medieval predecessor was demolished. The sculptor Joseph Wilton and Vice-Admiral Robert Plampin are buried in the churchyard and both memorials carry their own Grade II entries, NHLE 1183582 and NHLE 1390858. The churchyard railings and gates are Grade II, NHLE 1357970, and the pair of gatepiers at the entrance to Overton Drive are Grade II, NHLE 1081022.
