Wanstead Park

The park was registered at Grade II* on 1 October 1987 as list entry 1000194, and Historic England records the registered area as 161.74 hectares. The City of London Corporation bought it in 1880 from Henry Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley, and has been Conservator of Epping Forest since the Epping Forest Act 1878. The Corporation describes the park as "once a formal landscape surrounding the great Wanstead House, often compared to Blenheim Palace"; the house is gone and the park remains. It publishes the Chestnut Trail as a circular walk through the park, fishing at Perch Pond and the Ornamental Waters, and a bluebell season in Chalet Wood from March to May, asking visitors to keep to the marked paths. The Temple, NHLE 1081016, and the Grotto, NHLE 1183624, both Grade II, stand inside the registered boundary. Wanstead station is about 1,270 m from the Temple and the Corporation gives the park as a 1 km walk from it.
