The Grotto, Wanstead Park
Historic site · Wanstead, England
The Grotto stands on the bank of the Ornamental Waters in Wanstead Park, about 270 m from the E11 2LT postcode unit, and is listed Grade II as NHLE 1183624. It is a roofless shell, seen from the lakeside path rather than entered.
History
The Grade II listing was made on 20 December 1954 as list entry 1183624, at national grid reference TQ 41926 87480, inside the Grade II* registered landscape of Wanstead Park, NHLE 1000194. It is a surviving garden structure of the Wanstead House estate. It is a separate list entry from the two grottoes at Valentines Park in Ilford, NHLE 1244052 and NHLE 1183617, which are different structures in a different park. Redbridge holds no scheduled monuments, and garden buildings of this kind carry much of the borough's older fabric instead.
